Shirakawa-go, located in Shirakawa village, Gifu Prefecture, is world-famous for its unique Gassho farmhouse and enshrined as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Doburoku Matsuri Festival is held every autumn from the end of September into mid-October.
This local festival is praying for a bountiful harvest, safety, and peace in the village, offerings of Doburoku (a traditional Japanese homebrewed concoction) are made to the gods.

What is the Doburoku Matsuri Festival?

Doburoku Matsuri Festival is held at multiple shrines throughout the village from the end of September into mid-October, and it is also the biggest celebration at Shirakawa region.

Doburoku is a unfiltered sake made using only rice, malted rice and water. In snowy Shirakawa-go, Doburoku is made in the shrine’s brewery from late January.
In the autumn of the harvest, Doburoku is dedicated to the gods with Shishimai (Japanese lion dancing) and Kagura, and is served in abundance to the local people who gather for the festival.

As the event began, some ladies served sake one after another into the cups of each participant.
They busily poured the doburoku into the flat cups and filled them.
Locals bring homemade pickles and other items to enjoy the doburoku, a lively drink of sacred sake.

Doburoku looks like rice porridge but it is a very palatable sake with the sweetness of rice and a slight sourness. We enjoy sake with the locals and soak yourself in the lively festive atmosphere.

Everyone is welcome to participate in this fun festival, so why not take a trip to Shirakawa-go, Gifu Prefecture, during this clear autumn season?
